Rose Sangria

Sangria happens to be high on my list of favorites things to sip. This isn’t the first sangria recipe I’ve shared with you, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

However, I do feel it’s a special sangria recipe and worth trying at your earliest convenience.

What is Sangria made of?

Unlike classic sangria made with dark Spanish wine and orange juice, this Rose (Rosé) Sangria Recipe is lighter, with a tangy-sweet finish.

Sangria Recipe Ingredients

And just look at the color! So what’s in it?

So glad you asked…

  • French Rosé Wine – A crisp wine with a light citrus-floral quality.
  • Pink Grapefruit Juice – For its pink color and delicate acidity.
  • Bourbon – This adds some sweetness but also depth, with notes of caramel and vanilla. (P.S. Bourbon and grapefruit juice are meant to be.)
  • Honey – This adds some sweetness and balances out the twang.
  • Chambord – For a bright berry flavor.
  • Watermelon Balls, Strawberries and Raspberries – Fruity pink things are added to the mix to absorb all that boozy goodness.

How To Make Sangria

This rose sangria recipe is a little bolder than traditional sangria, however, you will not believe the depth and intrigue it provides.

  1. Use amelon baller to scoop watermelon balls out of a large slice of fresh watermelon. Slice the strawberries.

  2. Pour the rosé wine, grapefruit juice, bourbon, honey and Chambord in a large pitcher. Stir until the honey dissolves into the mixture. (If your honey is especially thick, warm it first to thin it out before adding.) Then add the watermelon balls and strawberries. Cover then refrigerate sangria.

  3. After at least two hours, stir and taste for sweetness. If you like your sangria on the sweeter side, stir in a little more honey. If the sangria is too strong, plan to pour it over ice. When ready to serve stir in the fresh raspberries and pour into glasses.

Soaking the Fruit

Fresh watermelon, strawberries, and raspberries soak in the Rosé Sangria Recipe until the base is sweet, and the fruit is fully loaded.

Then stir and sip. Once you reach the bottom of the glass, a little gift is waiting for you… Irresistible boozy watermelon and berries to nibble one at a time.

Make This Sangria Recipe Ahead Of Time

This is a wonderful recipe to make ahead of time. That’s because it requires the fruit to soak in the liquid for at least two hours. The longer it soaks the boozier the fruit gets. So you can soak them for a couple more hours or even overnight!

In fact, Sangria can last in the fridge for up to three days. Be careful though because the fruit could start to go bad. So remember to make sure to use fresh fruit!

How to Serve Sangria

If you have a larger group, you can serve sangria in a punch bowl. For smaller gatherings, a traditional sangria pitcher is the way to go. If you don’t have one, I rounded up the best sangria pitchers, including a classic blue-rimmed pitcher like the one I own. It’s available on Amazon for around $40.

Sangria Substitutions

If grapefruit juice isn’t your thing, orange juice would be the next best option.

What you’re looking for here is the acidity that grapefruit brings to the mix of liquids. You might not get that perfect pink color but it’s still going to taste great!

FAQs

How do you spice up a bottle of sangria? ›

Use a different liqueur: If brandy isn't your thing, cognac or orange liqueur (such as Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec) are also popular additions to sangria here in Spain. Add different fruit: Sangria is the perfect use for leftover fresh or frozen fruit, so feel free to add in whatever you have on hand.

What is rose sangria made of? ›

Combine the rose, pomegranate juice, lemon juice, sugar, Grand Marnier, Cognac, 1 cup of water, and 1 cup of ice in a large glass pitcher. Stir in the raspberries, strawberries, and plums, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours but preferably overnight.

Can you drink sangria straight? ›

My sangria is delicious straight up or topped off with a little bubbly water to dilute the alcohol a bit and add some fizz. I'm pretty sure it'll add some fizz to your life even without the bubbly water. In a blender puree the peaches until smooth and pour into an ice cube tray.

What is sangria supposed to taste like? ›

Sangria is as sweet as you make it. As a general rule, it's going to be fruity, so start with a dry red wine to keep that sugar content down. Pick fruits that lean more tart than sweet (like Granny Smith apples rather than white peaches), add more acidic juice like lemonade, or simply don't add sugar to your mixture.

What to add to bottled red sangria? ›

Add apples, oranges, and sugar to a large pitcher and muddle with a muddler or wooden spoon for 45 seconds. Add orange juice and brandy and muddle again to combine for 30 seconds.

Does sangria taste better the longer it sits? ›

If you taste the sangria just after mixing it, you'll probably think it tastes harsh or unbalanced. After a night in the fridge, it will taste mellow and juicy. Sangria gets better and better as it sits.

Why was sangria illegal? ›

Sangria, wine mixed with fruit, has always been legal and available. The issue comes about when Sangria is mixed with brandy or other spirits that raises the alcohol content of the drink. Alcohol-boosted Sangria was illegal because of a 1934 law formed post-prohibition to keep the percentage of alcohol low in drinks.

How much alcohol is in rose sangria? ›

Even with the brandy, all of the nonalcoholic ingredients balance it out to produce a drink that's about the same strength as a normal glass of wine. On average, this rosé sangria should mix up to 9 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

Is sangria stronger than wine? ›

Here is a rough guideline: EU law says bottles from Spain are limited by law to less than 12% alcohol by volume (ABV). Bottles produced in the U.S. usually have between 5% and 15%. Sangria made with red wine is usually stronger than white wine punches.

Does sangria get u drunk? ›

In short: It can get you very drunk. Embarrass-yourself drunk.

Is sangria healthy for you? ›

Sangria contains all the properties and benefits of red wine. Thanks to its powerful antioxidants, polyphenols and flavonoids protect cells from aging. And also has resveratrol is a substance having the grapes that protects against inflammatory processes in the body.

What is the best wine for sangria? ›

The best wine for sangria is Garnacha (also called Grenache) or Pinot Noir. Garnacha comes from Spain, so it's my top pick for authentic Spanish sangria! Choose an inexpensive wine (under $20) that you would enjoy on its own.

What kind of wine is best for sangria? ›

Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and any red medium-bodied varieties from Spain such as malbec and grenache are all solid options. If you're having difficulty choosing, stick to an easy-to-drink red blend. An even-flavored, well-rounded wine won't steal the show from the extra ingredients added to your homemade sangria.

How long will sangria last in the fridge? ›

Sangria will last for about three to five days in the refrigerator if stored in an airtight container. It will only last for a day or two if stored in the pitcher covered with storage wrap, so we recommend moving it to an airtight container if you don't plan on drinking it all within two days.

How do you make boxed sangria taste better? ›

Throw in some fruit

Add any fruit from berries to apples to pineapple, and you've got homemade sangria.

What flavors go well with sangria? ›

Due to its refreshing and fruity nature, sangria pairs best with salty, smoky, and even spicy dishes. Luckily, cheese comes in all shapes and sizes and typically goes well with at least one or two dishes. The most important thing to remember when pairing with your red or white sangria – the earthier the better.

Do you chill bottled sangria? ›

However, Sangria has wine and fruit in it - and these things tend to decay in warmth. Wine becomes vinegar rather quickly once exposed to air. Fruit of course gets mushy and falls apart. It's really in your best interest to keep your Sangria in the fridge at all times - and use ice cubes when it's out on the table.
