Bloodborne: 10 Things You Need To Know About The Blood-Starved Beast (2024)

The Blood-Starved Beast is one of the more viscerally disturbing enemies the player faces in Bloodborne. Its unnatural appearance, lightning-fast attacks, and bone-chilling backstory make this a nightmarish enemy to face that only gets more terrifying the more the player understands and learns about it.

To really drive the point home and expose the underlying horror of this beast there are somethings players should know about this enemy. Whether it’s the explanation for the creature’s appearance, its role in Yarnham society, or it’s strange connection to the Great Ones here’s the gritty details.

10 There’s More Than One

For veterans this isn’t news, but for the average player too focused on staying alive to pay attention this has some interesting implications. The one players are most likely to come across is crucified in the church of Old Yarnham.

Another Blood-Starved Beast can be encountered in the Old Hunters DLC where it’s hiding in a cave near the river of blood. The fact that this isn’t a unique creature suggests that there is a way to consistently create Blood-Starved Beasts.

9 It’s Female

This is deduced from the fact that female Blood Patients bear the closest resemblance to Blood-Starved Beasts. They’re in the process of losing their fur and employ similar fighting tactics such as using their talons primarily with grappling moves.

But what really cinches this connection is that female Blood Patients are unique in applying slow poison like the Blood-Starved Beast, this is something male Blood Patients don’t do. This means all Blood-Starved Beasts encountered in the game are female.

8 Worshipped By Beast Patients

A further connection between the Beast Patients and the Blood-Starved beast results from the crucified one encountered in the church. Multiple Beast Patients are encountered in a circle around the Beast drinking its blood in ritualistic fashion.

It’s unclear precisely why they’re doing this. It could be that they wish to ascend to the beast’s grander status and drinking it’s blood accomplishes this. It could be they were seeking to heal themselves of injury. Or it could be this was for religious purposes.

7 Its Skin Is Peeled Back

The skin flapping on the sides of the Beast is not a condition of its nature or damage inflicted by a weapon in battle. The skin was intentionally peeled back starting from the spine and flayed open like butterfly wings.

Some players had the misconception that this was proof of it transitioning into something else like a caterpillar slowly emerging from the cocoon, but this isn’t the case. The skin was peeled back with surgical precision for a very specific purpose.

6 This Was Done To Collect Blood

It turns out the Healing Church is responsible for the mutilation of the Blood Starved Beast. The crucified beast provides evidence that flaying back the skin would allow for blood to be extracted without the beast’s wounds healing over.

The name Blood-Starved further suggests that the blood was drained from the creature for the Healing Church’s purposes. The Church was likely experimenting with methods to drain the blood and keep the creature alive during the process, the crucified Beast was a failure, the boss the player encounters was a success.

5 Were Likely Blood Saints

This further insinuates that the Blood-Starved Beast was likely a Blood Saint. A nun chosen by the Church to provide healing via blood extraction and experimentation with the Great Ones. This corruption of the blood resulted in the nuns becoming Beast Patients who then through some unknown means become larger beasts that are harvested for blood turning into Blood-Starved Beasts.

Knowing this gives players an idea of the disturbing and corrupt process necessary for the Church to maintain its power and status via blood healing. A vicious cycle of corruption with Blood Saints degenerating into Blood-Starved Beasts.

4 Bleeds Poison

Because the beasts are starved of blood some other substance began to flow in their veins. The obvious answer is slow-poison began replacing the life blood, but why it was poison or even the nature of the poison is unclear.

It also seems to appear that this is necessary to surviving the blood extraction process. If all Blood-Starved Beasts are female and the primary difference between female Beast Patients and male ones is the presence of poison in their system, then it’s likely this poison helps them survive the bloodletting. Why this is or what this means is unknown.

3 Connected To The Moon Presence

Bloodborne: 10 Things You Need To Know About The Blood-Starved Beast (8)

The game hints at a connection between the Blood-Starved Beast and the Moon Presence. On the altar beneath the crucified Beast is the vague depiction of The Moon Presence. It’s also noted that the limbs of Beasts bears an uncanny resemblance to the tails of The Moon Presence.

It’s likely that as The Moon Presence began to draw close to Yarnham the blood that had been infused in the Blood Saints started to corrupt their bodies.

2 Hostile To Old Hunters And Their Hounds

Another interesting mechanic in the game is that Blood-Starved Beasts are coded to be hostile towards the Old Hunters and their dogs. This isn’t terribly surprising considering the Old Hunters were charged with tracking down and hunting the beasts.

But it is an interesting thing to include in the game considering there is never a scenario where Blood-Starved Beasts and Old Hunters interact without the player willfully and carefully causing such an encounter. It shows how even the coding of the game provides clues and supports the game’s lore.

1 Roams The Chalice Dungeons

Finally the last interesting tidbit about the Blood-Starved Beast is that they can be found wandering the Chalice Dungeons. The lore behind the Chalice Dungeons is deep and complicated, but it’s generally understood they’re where everything started with citizens of Yarnham finding old and lost things in these ruins.

Why the Blood-Starved Beasts wander these crumbling halls and tunnels is a mystery. Perhaps they merely stumbled across them and became lost, maybe they’re drawn to these dens as a beast-like instinct, or perhaps it’s a deeper component of the game’s complicated lore. A clue players have yet to discern.
